Public Secondary Schools in Kajiado North Sub-County, Kajiado. The social learning theory by
Albert Bandura (1977) formed the basis of the theoretical framework. The study adopted the
descriptive survey design. The target population was form two and form three students, including
teachers of English language in public secondary schools in Kajiado North Sub-County, Kajiado.
To sample schools, the researcher used stratified random sampling method. To sample student
respondents the researcher used simple random sampling technique. Purposive and simple random
techniques were used to sample teacher respondents. The data collection instruments used were a
questionnaire for both teachers and students. Data collected was tabulated, coded and processed
using statistical package for social science (SPSS Version 21) software. Qualitative data was
thematically analysed adding strength to the quantitative data. The validity and reliability of these
instruments were determined by a pilot study as well as the opinion of the supervisor. The findings
of this study established that students’ writing skills are below average which include: lack of
vocabulary, poor English spellings, and poor punctuation. The study also established that students
perceive English writing as difficult and uninteresting. Eventually, this negatively influences their
writing skills in English compositions. The findings also revealed that the availability of teaching
materials positively influences the acquisition of English writing skills among students. The study
recommends that the ministry of education, the school administration and parents and guardians
should collaborate in providing learning platforms and materials to the learners and teachers. This
will enable the effective learning and teaching of English writings kills.
