Influence of students' perception towards poetry on academic performance in public secondary school in Butula constituency, Busia Kenya

Abstract

Students' academic performance is largely influenced by their motivation and overall attitude
toward education, with perception playing a crucial role in either enhancing or hindering their
success. This study examines how students' perceptions of poetry affect their performance in
English, particularly in public secondary schools in Butula Constituency, Busia County. The
Kenyan Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) recognizes poetry as a vital component of the
English curriculum, as it fosters creative thinking and emotional understanding. Conducted in three
secondary schools within the region, the research involved 120 participants—90 students and 30
English teachers who provided data through questionnaires. The findings indicate that while many
students are engaged in poetry due to its dramatization and interactive elements, they often struggle
with interpretation due to its complex language and abstract themes. However, teacher
encouragement, peer discussions, and interactive learning strategies help sustain their interest and
comprehension. Additionally, modern instructional tools such as videos and digital resources
significantly enhance understanding by making poetry more accessible and relatable, reinforcing
the importance of innovative teaching methods in improving student engagement and academic
performance.Despite these benefits, limited access to poetry learning materials presents a
significant challenge, affecting students’ ability to analyze poems effectively. This lack of resources
undermines their confidence and participation, making poetry appear more difficult compared to
other aspects of the English curriculum. To enhance academic performance in poetry, the study
emphasizes the need for innovative teaching approaches, improved resource availability, and a shift
in students' attitudes toward poetry as a valuable and enriching literary component. By fostering a

more engaging and resourceful learning environment, educators can help students develop a deeper
appreciation for poetry and improve their overall performance in English.
