Abstract

The overall objective of the research was to examine social inclusion and sustainable development
of persons living with disabilities in social activities in private and public universities in Langata
subcounty within Nairobi County, Kenya, with a specific focus on Tangaza Univesity, and
Cooperative University of Kenya. This overall objective was was guided by three specific
objectives formulated as; evaluting the abilities of , determining the opportunities available to ,
and examining the level of dignity accorded to, persons living with disabilities when engaging in
social activities of universities. The Inclusive Development Theory served as the foundation of the
study. A mixed method research approach comprising of a combination of a descriptive survey
qualitative research designs were employed in the research. In relation to the first objective of
research that sought to evaluate the abilities of persons with disabilities to engage in social
activities of the universities, the findngs of the research indicated that students with disability were,
in general, capable of participating in university social activites, Regarding the second objective
of the research that was aimed at investigating opportunities available for people with disabilities
to participate in social activities in universities, the findings of the research from the two
universities were mixed, with ratings of the current opportunities that are available for students
with disabilities to partcipate in university social activities in Tangaza University being generally
high (Good and Excellent), while the ratings from Cooperative University tended to be
comparatively lower (Fair, Poor, or ,Very Poor. Some of the findings from the third specific
objective of the research which sought to examine the level of dignity and respect accorded to
persons living with disabilities in the universities, also returned mixed results, with research
partcipants from Tangaza University, generally indicating that people living with disability are
treated with respect and dignity when it comes to partcipating in social activities of the university,
while partcipants from Cooperative University, generally indicating that people living with
disabilities were not always treated with dignity and respect . The findings of the research indicate
that private universities, such as Tangaza University, have tended to enact policies and
implemented actions such as having a Disability-Inclusive office that specifically addresses the
inclusivity of PWDs into social and other activities of the university, and which has led to people
with disabilities regarding the institution as mindful of their wellfare, while public universities,
such as Cooperative University of Kenya, may require to pay more attention to the plight or needs
of people living with disability , for PWDs in the institution to feel more accomodated, and treated
with dignity and respect when engaging in social activities.
