This study will aim to analyze the effects of learner-based factors on teaching and learning of
geography in Dagoretti, Sub-County, Nairobi County, Kenya. The following objectives guided
the study: To examine how different teaching and learning resources influence teaching and
learning geography, to analyze if there is a relationship between students' attitudes towards
geography and teaching and learning geography, and to find out how learner engagement affects
teaching and learning geography. In order to achieve these objectives, the researcher
administered a questionnaire to the students and teachers from the selected schools in Dagoretti.
Both the students and teachers were randomly sampled to include 50 students form two, 50
students form three, and 6 geography teachers. The study used a survey research design. The
Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used for data analysis. The study found that
learning resources in public secondary schools at Dagoretti sub-county, Nairobi County, had a
significant contribution in helping both teachers and students to learn and teach geography. The
study also showed that students' attitudes towards geography might affect the teaching and
learning of geography. A positive attitude towards geography could help students perform well in
the process of learning geography. Finally, the study found that students are actively engaged in
geography class, which might help them in understanding geographical concepts, even though
geography involves complicated concepts. The majority of the geography teachers from public
secondary schools in Dagoretti sub-county were in support that students are actively engaged in
geography class.
