The purpose of the study was to investigate the “Factors Affecting Students’ Performance in
Semantics and Syntax in Teaching and Learning in Public Schools Ainabkoi, Uasin Gishu
County”. The objectives of the study were; To assess students’ attitude and motivation towards
learning semantics and syntax, in public schools, Ainabkoi, Uasin Gishu County: To assess the
effect of teaching methods on students’ performance in semantics and syntax, in public schools,
Ainabkoi, Uasin Gishu County: How to improve the students’ understanding of Semantics and
Syntax in public schools, Ainabkoi, Uasin Gishu County. The researcher used questionnaires to
collect data from both students and teachers within the selected schools in the area. The study
used 30% of the population sample of the whole population which was selected randomly. A
sample of 93 students and 7 teachers was used. The data was collected to achieve the set
objectives. The collected data was analyzed using statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS)
and Microsoft Excel. The analyzed data was presented using pie charts, tables and bar charts.
Interpretation and Recommendations was done based on the findings of the research. The
researcher found out that Students’ negative attitudes, low motivation, lack of confidence, and
negative peer influence hinder their learning of semantics and syntax, while recognizing the
relevance of the subject increase’s motivation and engagement. Teaching methods are largely
ineffective due to limited use of interactive strategies, technology tools, practical exercises, and
an overreliance on teacher-centered approaches, which restrict student participation and
understanding. The availability of study materials, diverse teaching methods, consistent
feedback, adequate infrastructure, administrative support, and collaborative learning activities
are key strategies that can improve students’ understanding of semantics and syntax. The study
Recommended that Students: Should develop a positive attitude and active interest in learning
semantics and syntax by engaging in group discussions, peer reviews. Teachers: Should employ
diverse, interactive, and learner-centered teaching methods, including the use of technology and
real-life examples, to make semantics and syntax more engaging. Principals: Should ensure the
provision of adequate teaching and learning resources, including textbooks, ICT tools, and
functional language labs, to support the teaching of semantics and syntax. Ministry of Education
(MoE): Should develop policies that support the integration of modern teaching technologies in
the English language curriculum, particularly in teaching semantics and syntax. The study
concluded that students' performance in semantics and syntax is influenced by multiple factors,
including their attitudes, motivation levels, teaching methods used, and availability of learning
resources.
