The purpose of the study was to look at “Analysis of Challenges Encountered in the Teaching
and Learning of Statistics in Mathematics in Public Day Secondary Schools in Longisa Sub-
County, Bomet County”. The objectives of the study were; To find out the students’ attitude
towards learning statistics; To examine the influence of learning resources in effective teaching
and learning of statistics; and to find out how the level of engagement of the learners influence
the teaching and learning of statistics in public day secondary schools in Longisa Sub-County,
Bomet County. The researcher used questionnaires to collect data from both students and
teachers within the selected schools in the area. The study used 30% of the population sample of
the whole population which was selected randomly. A sample of 102 students and 8 teachers was
used. The collected data was analyzed using statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS) and
Microsoft Excel. The analyzed data was presented using pie charts, tables and bar charts. The
researcher found out that many students find statistics interesting, which boosts engagement, but
others view it as difficult, lowering participation. Some students also fail to see its relevance to
their future, reducing motivation, there is a shortage of textbooks and technological tools like
calculators and computers, limiting effective learning. Visual aids and interactive resources are
underutilized in most schools, group discussions and interactive methods enhance understanding,
but some students remain disengaged. Real-life examples help, though they are not always
effectively used. The study recommended that Students should actively participate in group
discussions and interactive activities and regularly practice statistical problems using resources
like past papers and quizzes, Teachers should use real-life examples and practical applications in
lessons and apply diverse formative assessments (quizzes, discussions) for feedback, Principals
should provide essential resources (textbooks, calculators, visual aids) and organize teacher
14
workshops on interactive teaching methods, The Ministry of Education should fund ICT tools
and software for statistics teaching and develop policies promoting statistics and support modern
teaching approaches. The researcher concluded that the teaching and learning of statistics in
mathematics in public day secondary schools in Longisa Sub-County are significantly influenced
by students&; attitudes, availability of learning resources, and the level of learner engagement.
