Schools in Marakwet East, Elgeyo Marakwet County: To determine the effect of student
absenteeism on their academic performance in English due to banditry attacks in Public
Secondary Schools in Marakwet East, Elgeyo Marakwet County: To investigate the
psychological impact of banditry attacks on students' ability to focus and perform in English in
Public Secondary Schools in Marakwet East, Elgeyo Marakwet County. The researcher used
questionnaires to collect data from both students’ teachers and principals within the selected
schools in the area. The study used 30% of the population sample of the whole population which
was selected randomly. A sample of 97 students, 9 teachers and 3 principals were used. The
collected data was analyzed using statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft
Excel. The analyzed data was presented using pie charts, tables and bar charts. The researcher
found that limited educational resources, including inadequate infrastructure and a shortage of
learning materials, significantly hinder students' English performance. Student absenteeism due
to insecurity disrupts learning, leading to gaps in language skills and poor academic results.
Additionally, the psychological impact of banditry attacks, including anxiety and trauma,
severely affects students' ability to focus and perform in English, contributing to low motivation
and poor academic outcomes. The study recommended that Students should seek support from
counselors and engage in study groups to cope with challenges. Parents should provide
emotional support and encourage regular school attendance. Teachers, principals, and the
Ministry of Education should work together to create a safe learning environment, provide
resources, and support students' mental health in conflict-affected areas. The researcher
concluded that banditry attacks significantly affect students' academic performance in English in
public secondary schools in Marakwet East, Elgeyo Marakwet County. Limited educational
resources, student absenteeism, and the psychological impact of insecurity all contribute to poor
performance in English. These challenges not only hinder students' learning abilities but also
undermine their motivation, focus, and overall academic progress in the subject.
