The overall objective of the research was to examine migration as a sustainable
development strategy for livelihood securities in Mallilieha location, Valleta, in the Republic of
Malta, Europe. This overall objective was was guided by three specific objectives formulated
as:assessing socio-economoc factors of migration in Mallieha, Malta; evaluating the effect of
cultural diversity of the migrants in the Maltese society; and investigating the strategic ways to
improve migration in Maltese society . The Neoclassical Economic Theory served as the
foundation of the study. A quantitative descriptive survey research design was employed in the
research. The target population of research comprised of migrants located in Mallieha region of
the Republic of Malta, in Europe, with a target sample of 60 migrants. Data was collected via a
structured questionnaire and analyzed, using descriptive statistics, with the support of the SPSS
and MS Excel software packages. Findings from the first objective of the indicated that
consideration of employment opportunities was the main reason for migrating to Mallieha.
Other factors that were considered before migrating to Malta included betty living conditions,
education opportunities, political stability in Malta, religious duties, War in their country of
origin , and family re-unification. majority of the research participants indicated that migration
had improved their economic and social wellbeing. Findings from the second objective of the
research indicated that, in general, Malta exhibits a considerable cultural diversity. It was also
determined that ways in which cultural diversity had influenced Maltese society were largely via
strengthening of the economy through migrant labour and h contribution to intercultural
understanding . From the second objective of research it was also determined that the majority
migrants had experienced or observed discrimination based on cultural diversity in Malta., with
the most common form encountered being workplace discrimination, followed by social
exclusion and verbal abuse. Findings from the third objective of the study indicated that migrants
had contributed positively to the economic growth of Malta. Standing out as major challenge
faced by migrants in Mallieha were job security and housing/accommodation issues. Among the
strategies that stood out as policies that can be improved to enhance migration a sustainable
development strategy in Malta, were; better opportunities for migrants, access to social services
such as health and education , improving housing, and more support for migrant entrepreneurs.
Among the recommendations emerging from the findings of the research are: the migrants
economic conditions as reflected in the wages and/or salaries they earn needs to improve. As a
subsequent outcome of the efforts by the Malatese Government to improve the economic
conditions, the socio-economic aspects touching on access to health, access to decent
accommodation, access to education, and access to food, should also improve, or the
environment made conducive for the migrants to access and enjoy such basic amenities of life.
The Maltese government also needs to enact laws and/or formulate policies that encourage
harmonious co-existence of people of diverse culture and discourage discrimination based on
diverse cultures in the Maltese society.
