Abstract

The study Analysed Factors Influencing Teaching and Learning of Oceans, Seas and Their
Coasts in Public Secondary Schools in Soy Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County. The objectives of
the study were: to find out the influence of learners’ attitudes towards Oceans, Seas and Their
Coasts in Geography in public secondary schools in Soy Sub-County; to investigate the
availability of teaching and learning resources for Oceans, Seas and Their Coasts in Geography;
and to analyze ways of improving teaching and learning of Oceans, Seas and Their Coasts in
Geography in the same schools. The researcher used questionnaires to collect data from both
students and teachers within selected schools in the area. The study used 30% of the total target
population, selected through random sampling. A sample of 75 students and 10 teachers was
used. The collected data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS)
version 30.0, and the findings were presented using pie charts, tables, and bar graphs. The
findings revealed that learners’ attitudes significantly influenced the teaching and learning of the
topic, as a majority showed interest and participated in class activities. However, the study also
established that resource availability was a major challenge. Many schools lacked adequate
instructional materials such as maps, diagrams, and access to digital tools like computers and
internet. In addition, although group discussions and tests were commonly used, innovative
strategies like use of projectors and student-led presentations were less prevalent. Based on the
findings, the study recommended that students should adopt more active roles in the learning
process, including participation in projects and self-guided study using digital resources.
Teachers should be encouraged to use multimedia tools and diversify instructional methods to
enhance engagement. School principals should invest in relevant learning resources and support
continuous teacher training. The Ministry of Education should implement policies to ensure
equitable distribution of teaching materials and support the integration of ICT in Geography
instruction. The study concluded that learners’ attitudes, the availability of teaching and learning
resources, and the application of diverse instructional strategies all adequately influence the
teaching and learning of Oceans, Seas and Their Coasts in public secondary schools. Addressing
these factors is essential to improve students’ understanding and academic performance in
Geography.
