Analysis of school based factors influencing academic performance in business studies in public secondary day schools in Nyatike subcounty, Migori county

Abstract

This research project investigated the analysis of school-based factors influencing academic
performance in business studies in public mixed secondary schools in Nyatike Sub-County,
Migori County. The study was guided by the following objectives: To examine the influence of
students perception on academic performance in Business Studies in public day secondary
schools, To investigate the influence of usage of instructional resources on student’s academic
performance in Business Studies in public day secondary schools and to determine the influence
of curriculum emphasis on academic performance in public day secondary schools . The data
collection was carried out using questionnaires; data was collected from 3 public mixed
secondary schools. Business studies students and teachers were selected using a simple random
sampling method. The Statistical Package for Social Science, SPSS version 21 has been used for
data analysis, and the descriptive statistics was employed to present data. The researcher found
out that most students have negative attitudes towards business studies, they selected the subject
out of influence by mentors ,even though their teachers motivate them to study Business studies
they find it difficult to comprehend the complex calculations in Business studies .This directly
influence their performance in the subject. Few students have positive attitudes towards business
studies. The study also unveiled that students who have positive attitudes towards business
studies perform well in the subject while those that have negative attitudes register low
performance.Most public secondary schools do not have adequately equipped library and
computer laboratory with instructional materials such as Business Studies textbooks, computers,
laptops, projectors, and internet. Also, both teachers and students because of their insufficient do
not make adequate use of the instructional materials, hence, low achievement in academic
performance in the subject. Students who, willingly chose business perform better than those
who chose the subject because of influence from others. Students with negative attitudes toward
business studies perform poorly in the subject. In addition, the researcher found out that
Business Studies does not receive adequate attention in terms of time allocation and
prioritization as compared to other subjects, which could largely hinder students' academic
performance in the subject, the instructional time allocated to business was also not sufficient in
with regard to the curriculum content. This influences negatively the performance in the subject.
The researcher recommended that the Government should provide enough teaching and learning
materials by way of providing a well-equipped library with textbooks and a well-equipped
computer laboratory with computers, projectors, and internet to enable them to effectively teach
the curriculum. The government should also ensure prioritization and time allocation in Business
studies is enough to fully cover the curriculum. Teachers should make full utilization of
instructional materials, and encourage students. Principals should conduct seminars to update
teachers in their teaching skills and supervise both teachers and students to ensure good
academic performance. Students should have a personal study timetable with more time
allocated to business studies and should use the available learning resources. Parents and mentors
can help motivate their children to have a positive attitude towards business studi
