Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the “Analysis of Analysis of Factors Affecting
Students Choice of Geography as an Examinable Subject in Public Secondary Schools in
Sitatunga Sub County Trans Nzoia County”. The objectives of the study were; to examine the
influence of teaching methods on students’ choice of Geography as an examinable subject in
public secondary schools in Sitatunga Sub-county: To assess the role of learning resources in
shaping students’ decisions to take Geography in public secondary schools in Sitatunga Sub-
county: To explore students’ perceptions of Geography and effect on Geography selection in
public secondary schools in Sitatunga Sub-county. The researcher used questionnaires to
collect data from both students and teachers within the selected schools in the area. The study
used 30% of the population sample of the whole population which was selected randomly. A
sample of 90 students and 10 teachers was used. The data was collected to achieve the set
objectives. The collected data was analyzed using statistical packages for social sciences
(SPSS). The analyzed data was presented using pie charts, tables and bar charts. The study
found that teaching methods significantly affect students’ choice of Geography, with
interactive and engaging approaches increasing interest, while traditional methods led to
disengagement. The availability of resources like textbooks, maps, and audio-visual materials
also played a key role, as well-equipped classrooms encouraged positive attitudes, whereas
resource shortages discouraged subject selection. Additionally, students’ perceptions such as
viewing Geography as useful or difficult along with peer influence, strongly shaped their
decision to take the subject. The study recommended that; Students should actively
participate in Geography lessons, appreciate its real-life relevance, use available resources
wisely, and resist negative peer pressure. Teachers are encouraged to use engaging, student-
centered methods like group work, real-life examples, and visual aids to make learning more
appealing. School principals and the Ministry of Education should ensure adequate resources,
support teacher development, and promote the subject’s value to boost student interest and
enrollment. The study concluded that teaching methods, availability of learning resources, and
students’ perceptions all play a crucial role in influencing the choice of Geography. Effective
teaching and adequate resources foster interest and understanding. Positive perceptions and
peer influence further encourage students to select the subject.
