An analysis of challenges encountered in teaching and learning of fairy tales in English Literature in public secondary schools in Dagoretti South subcounty Nairobi

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the challenges faced in teaching and learning of fairy tales in English
Literature in public secondary schools within Dagoretti South Sub-County, Nairobi County. The
objectives guiding this research was: to investigate the challenges encountered in teaching and
learning of fairy tales; to examine the role of teaching techniques in addressing students’
performance in English Literature through fairy tales; assess the impact of teaching and learning
resources for fairy tales on students’ performance in English literature; and investigate how
students’ attitudes toward fairy tales in English literature influence their performance in English
Literature in public secondary schools in Dagoretti South Sub-County.
The study adopted a descriptive survey design, utilizing a quantitative research approach. The
target population was 10 public secondary schools in Dagoretti South Sub-County, with an
estimated 1186 students without Junior Secondary Students who are domiciled in junior schools
with an average total of 40 English teachers. A sample size of 3 public schools comprising (one
girls only school, one boys’ only school and one boys and girls mixed school) was selected with
12 English teachers and a total of 119 students randomly selected for the study.
Primary data was collected using a questionnaire distributed to the selected sample. The validity
of the research instrument was assessed through peer consultations and guidance from the
university supervisor to ensure the quality of the research questions. The reliability of the
instrument was determined through the test-retest method, where questionnaires will initially be
administered to respondents from the target population who are not part of the final sample.
The collected data was coded, reviewed for accuracy, and analyzed using the Statistical Package
for Social Scientists (SPSS). Results were presented using frequency tables, charts, and graphs.
Ethical considerations were observed by maintaining strict confidentiality of all data collected and
ensuring it is used exclusively for academic purposes.
