The role of urbanization in Youth crime in Kibra Kenya

College Institutional Repository Academic Archive

Abstract

Urbanization has reshaped the social, economic, and cultural aspects of modern cities,
including Nairobi. Kibera is the largest settlement in Africa and exemplifies the challenges of rapid
urban development. This research proposal investigates how urbanization affects youth crime in
Kibera, focusing on factors such as poverty, unemployment, overcrowding, inadequate education,
and few recreational facilities.
This study used a mixed methods approach to combine qualitative and quantitative data from
surveys, interviews, and discussions with key groups including youth, parents, community leaders,
and police officers. Secondary data from crime reports and urban surveys will contribute to important
research to identify the root causes of youth violence. The expected findings are intended to show
that urbanization goes beyond inequality and causes negative behaviors among youth. These studies
provided evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, urban planners and community
stakeholders to develop intervention plans. By addressing the underlying causes of crime through
sustainable urban development, this research is designed to create a safer and more productive
environment for young girls in Nairobi.
