The purpose of this study was to analyse the school based factors affecting student academic
performance in English in public secondary schools in Kajiado-north Sub-County, Kajiado
County. The study was guided by objectives on the availability of English teaching and learning
materials; the influence of students’ attitude towards English as a subject; how the teaching
methodologies affect teaching and learning of English in Kajiado north Sub-County, Kajiado
County. The study is grounded on Systems theory. It employs descriptive survey design. The
target population are the English students and their teachers in public secondary schools in
Kajiado North Sub-County, Kajiado County. The study used a sample size of 51 comprising 45
students and 6 teachers drawn from 3 public secondary schools in Kajiado north Sub-County.
The research findings reveal a positive correlation between the availability of English resources
and effective teaching and learning of English in public secondary schools .The schools with
adequate resources demonstrate a greater breadth and depth of teaching and learning compared
to the schools with inadequate resources. Students’ attitude towards English significantly
contributes to teaching and learning of the subject in public secondary school students. Students
with positive attitude towards English exhibit higher levels of knowing English and influencing
others positively.
