Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the Factors influencing the teaching and learning of
decimals in Mathematics in public secondary schools in Kajiado North Sub County, Kajiado
County. The study was guided by the following objectives: To find out the effects of
students’attitude towards the learning of decimals in Mathematics in public secondary schools
in Kajiado North Sub County, Kajiado County, To assess the effects of instructional resources
on students’ ability to perform better in decimals in Mathematics, To examine the effect of
students’ participation on the learning of decimals in Mathematics in public secondary schools
in Kajiado North Sub County, Kajiado County and to suggest possible interventions to improve
the overall performance of students in decimals in Kajiado North Sub County, Kajiado County.
The study adopted a descriptive survey design to help uncover the various factors affecting
students' ability to perform better in decimals in Mathematics. The study sample included 126
participants of which 114 were students and 12 were teachers of Mathematics. Data was
collected using questionnaires which were distributed to the sampled schools. It was then
analyzed using descriptive statistics where the quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS. The
data was then presented in pie charts, graphs and frequency tables to give a clear impression of
the trends in the data. The findings proved that students’ attitude, participation and instructional
resources have an impact on one's ability to have a better score in decimals in Mathematics.
The interventions to improve students' ability to show an improved better performance in
decimals in mathematics included use of educational media and technology in teaching
decimals in Mathematics and also proper implementation of student-centered learning
approach in teaching by ensuring inclusivity and embracing positive reinforcements. The
recommendations included implementing attitude-enrichment programs, encourage active
participation, promote equity in resource allocation and foster safe learning environments.
