Analysis of challenges in urbanization in Geography faced by learners in junior secondary schools in Kajiado North subcounty Kajiado county Kenya

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the “Analysis of Challenges in Urbanization in
Geography Faced by Learners in Junior Secondary Schools in Kajiado North Sub-County,
Kajiado County, Kenya.” The study was guided by three objectives: To examine the attitudes
of learners towards urbanization Geography in Kajiado North Sub-county, Kajiado County;
To investigate the availability of teaching and learning resources used for instruction of
urbanization in geography in Kajiado North Sub-county, Kajiado County; and To evaluate
ways of improving the teaching and learning of urbanization in geography in Kajiado North
Sub-county, Kajiado County. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design and
utilized questionnaires administered to 90 students and 10 teachers, selected through stratified
and simple random sampling techniques. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for
Social Sciences (SPSS) version 30.0 and presented in tables, graphs, and charts. The study
found that learners generally faced challenges in understanding urbanization concepts due to
limited teaching and learning resources, teacher-centered instructional methods, and
inadequate use of learner-friendly strategies such as group discussions, role-play, and
technology integration. The study recommended that schools and stakeholders should provide
adequate teaching resources, incorporate learner-centered approaches, enhance teacher
training on modern methodologies, and utilize ICT tools and local case studies to make
urbanization lessons more interactive and relatable. The study concluded that improving the
teaching and learning of urbanization in Geography requires a multifaceted approach that
addresses attitudes, resources, and pedagogy to enhance learner engagement and academic
performance.
