The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges facing teaching and learning of
riwaya in Kiswahili in public mixed secondary schools in Kaimbaga sub-county Nyandarua
County Kenya. The study was guided by the following objectives: To examine how frequency
of teaching and learning of “riwaya” affects teaching and learning of “riwaya” in Kiswahili in
public day secondary schools in Kaimbaga sub county Nyandarua county, to find out how
availability of resources challenge the teaching and learning of ‘riwaya‘ in Kiswahili in public
day secondary schools in Kaimbaga sub county, Nyandarua county and to assess the strategies
that can be used to cope with the challenges encountered in teaching and learning of ‘riwaya’
in Kiswahili in public day secondary schools in Kaimbaga sub county, Nyandarua County. The
employed survey design to assist the researcher discovering the challenges faced when teaching
and learning riwaya in Kiswahili. The study sampled 126 respondents comprising of 120
students and 6 Kiswahili teachers. Moreover, 121 respondents participated leading to 96%
return rate of research instruments. The instruments of data collection for this study were
questionnaires which were given to students and Kiswahili teachers in different public day
secondary schools in Kaimbaga sub-County Nyandarua County. Data were analyzed using
Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) where both qualitative and quantitative data
were gathered by administering questionnaires. In order to illustrate the findings of the study,
descriptive statistics were used where bar graphs pie chart and tables were generated to
illustrate quantitative data. Kiswahili teachers should employ varied and creative instructional
methods to engage students and promote deeper understanding of riwaya. School management
should ensure adequate provision of resources, including textbooks and instructional aids, to
support effective teaching and learning of riwaya in Kiswahili and finally Riwaya learners
should actively participate in lessons, engage in discussions, and seek feedback to maximize
their learning outcomes. The study found out that diverse teaching strategy, adequate resources
and regular class attendance should be seriously addressed to improve teaching and learning
riwaya.
