Abstract

The purpose of this research was to examine the students based factors influencing the choice of
geography in public secondary schools in Rarieda sub county Siaya County. The study purposed
to find out the influence that students’ career aspirations, students’ attitudes, peer influence and
students’ interest have on the choice of geography subject. Questionnaires were selected as the
data collection instrument. The collected data were analyzed quantitatively and tabulated through
descriptive statistics such as percentages, distribution tables and pie charts. The study population
involved three public secondary schools where a sample of 75 students and 8 teachers were
drawn. The study established that students’ career aspirations significantly influenced the
students’ choice of geography as they tend to choose geography bearing in mind the career paths
that geography exposes them to. Students with positive attitude towards geography tend to
choose it as those with negative attitudes are not motivated to choose it. Peer and parental
pressure may influence the students’ choice in geography but to only a smaller extent through
advice and not emulation. Positive peer influence leads to students making subject choices that
are favorable to the student but not the peer groups. Students’ interests dictate the readiness of
students to choose and love geography.
