Abstract

This study examined the challenges of teaching and learning the Sinai Covenant in
Christian Religious Education (CRE) and its impact on student performance in Kapsait
Secondary School, Lelan Sub-County, West Pokot County. The objectives were to: (1)
investigate challenges associated with teaching strategies, (2) examine challenges related to
the availability and adequacy of learning materials, and (3) determine how these challenges
influence student performance.

A descriptive survey design was adopted, targeting CRE teachers and Form Three and
Form Four students. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews, and analysed
through descriptive statistics and thematic analysis.

The findings revealed that CRE teachers predominantly used teacher-cantered methods
such as lectures and question-and-answer sessions, which students and teachers alike
considered ineffective. Learning materials, including Bibles, textbooks, and visual aids, were
insufficient and inequitably distributed, limiting the effectiveness of instruction.
Consequently, students reported difficulties in understanding the Sinai Covenant and
consistently performed poorly in related examinations.

The study concluded that ineffective teaching strategies, inadequate learning resources,
and the abstract nature of the Sinai Covenant hinder effective learning. It recommends the
adoption of learner-centred approaches, provision of adequate learning resources, continuous
professional development for teachers, and curriculum support from education stakeholders
