Abstract

This study examines the influence of the study of novels on grammar proficiency of learners in
public secondary schools in Ngong sub-county, Kajiado County. The objectives of the study
were: To determine the relationship between the frequency of studying novels and grammar
proficiency of public secondary school students in Ngong Sub-County, Kajiado County; to
evaluate the effect of reading comprehension of novels on students' grammar proficiency of
public secondary school students in Ngong Sub-County, Kajiado County; and to recommend
strategies for enhancing grammar proficiency through the study of novels of public secondary
school students in Ngong Sub-County, Kajiado County. Content-Based Instruction (CBI) by
Stephen Krashen (1970), formed the basis of the theoretical framework. The study adopted a
descriptive survey design. The target population was form two and form three students, including
teachers of English Language in Public secondary schools in Ngong Sub-County, Kajiado. To
sample schools, the researcher used a stratified random sampling method. To sample student
respondents, the researcher used a simple random sampling technique. Purposive and simple
random techniques were used to sample teacher respondents. The data collection instruments
used were a questionnaire for both teachers and students. Data collected was tabulated, coded,
and processed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Version 21) software.
Qualitative data were thematically analysed, adding strength to the quantitative data. The validity
and reliability of these instruments were determined by a pilot study as well as the opinion of the
supervisor. The findings of this study established that there is a relationship between the
frequency of Novel and the grammar proficiency, novel reading comprehension and grammar
proficiency. The analysis showed a positive correlation between novel-reading frequency and
improved grammar skills such as sentence construction and error correction. The results also
demonstrated that reading comprehension enhances understanding of writing style, vocabulary
use, and confidence in using proper grammar in both speaking and writing. Key strategies
recommended include integrating grammar-focused novel study into lessons, encouraging group
discussions, using novel-based examples for grammar retention, and increasing access to novels
in schools. The study recommends that the ministry of education, the school administration, and
parents and guardians should collaborate and ensure the availability of novels in schools and
include the study of grammar through novels in the curriculum of secondary school students.
