Abstract

This study investigates the factors affecting the teaching and learning of African Traditional Religion (ATR) within the context of Christian Religious Education (CRE) and their impact on academic performance among students in public secondary schools in Marakwet East Sub County, Elgeiyo Marakwet County. The research focuses on three primary objectives: assessing learners’ attitudes towards the teaching of ATR in CRE, identifying effective strategies to enhance the teaching and learning of ATR, and evaluating the availability of teaching materials related to ATR and their influence on student performance. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, gathering data through surveys, and classroom observations involving students, teachers, and educational administrators. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) will be utilized to analyze the quantitative data collected, providing insights into trends and relationships among the variables. The anticipated findings aim to highlight the significance of positive learner attitudes, effective instructional strategies, and adequate resource availability in improving educational outcomes. This study seeks to contribute to the discourse on integrating cultural education in religious studies, ultimately enhancing students’ understanding of ATR and its relevance in a contemporary educational context.
